Fuel Efficient Vehicles: Hybrid, Electric

From the days of our schooling we have been listening that there are two types of sources of energy, Renewable and non-renewable and unfortunately the energy sources we need are the non renewable ones..So keeping this in mind the automobile makers are coming up with newer technologies to improve the efficiency as well as to decrease the harmful burnt gases and as a result we got
Fuel Efficient (Hybrid, Electric) Vehicles...

What exactly is a Hybrid/Electric Vehicle??

In simple terms it's an automobile which uses sole electric power or in combination with petroleum sources to run it . The one which uses both the sources is called a Hybrid Vehicle whereas the one in which Electricity is the only source is called Electric Vehicle. The primary power source in  most of the cases remains the Petrol/Diesel and but for  secondary source the electric motor is used. But what exactly the purpose or need of using this hybrid technology if single power source is working fine..??

Why Hybrid/Electric vehicles and what are the benefits??

Using these vehicles, the most joyous benefit is the efficiency and the other benefit is for environment. Petroleum is a limited source ,so to overcome this constraint, Hybrid technology is a boon for this environment. Hybrid/Electric vehicles are packed up with advantages like High efficiency, Low emissions which ultimately saves our fuel, our environment and most importantly our pocket money.
But with plus there's always a minus, and here in this case the disadvantage is that these vehicles are relatively high in cost and maintenance :)

How Hybrid vehicle work??

Hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) combine the benefits of gasoline engines and electric motors and can be configured to obtain different objectives, such as improved fuel economy, increased power, or additional auxiliary power for electronic devices and power tools.

Some of the advanced technologies typically used by hybrids include

Regenerative Braking.

The electric motor applies resistance to the drivetrain causing the wheels to slow down. In return, the energy from the wheels turns the motor, which functions as a generator, converting energy normally wasted during coasting and braking into electricity, which is stored in a battery until needed by the electric motor.

Electric Motor Drive/Assist.

The electric motor provides additional power to assist the engine in accelerating, passing, or hill climbing. This allows a smaller, more efficient engine to be used. In some vehicles, the motor alone provides power for low-speed driving conditions where internal combustion engines are least efficient.

Automatic Start/Shutoff.

Automatically shuts off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop and restarts it when the accelerator is pressed. This prevents wasted energy from idling.

Some of the Hybrid/Electric vehicle:

Hybrid Honda Civic
Toyota Hybrid Prius

Mahindra's all electric Reva
