Articulated Buses : What and Why??

World is evolving and so is the technology and so is the creativity. Articulated buses came out as a result of technology and creativity evolution. These buses are ordinary buses but with extraordinary passenger capacity. The idea of these buses came to geniuses minds in early 1960's and what came out is known as Articulated Bus which has capability of seating over 120+ passengers...Let me tell you what are these buses??

Articulated Buses:

An articulated bus is a type of vehicle which has two(in some cases 3) rigid sections connected with the help of a pivoting joint similar to trains. This arrangement makes the articulated buses more spacious than the conventional type buses with an ability to maneuver easily throughout the street traffic. The length of these buses falls in the range of 18 meters in comparison of  12 meters for single section typical buses. The articulated buses having three sections attached can lead upto 25 meters in length. But many of you must be wondering why would the government choose Articulated buses if they have an option of Double Decker buses..well then keep reading below..

Articulated Buses over Double Decker Buses:

  • Rapid simultaneous boarding
  • Easy exit through more and larger doors
  • Larger passenger capacity (120+ versus 80−90)
  • Higher stability due to a lower centre of gravity
  • Efficiency is higher as the double decker provides higher resistance to air
  • Better accessibility for people with disabilities and the elderly

While Double Decker takes up only few points here

  • Surface area is less thus eating up less space on roads
  • Being shorter the maneuvering is bit better

So, the clear winner which comes out is Articulated Bus. This is the reason why the Indian government is thinking to introduce these buses into their transport network.
