Top 5 SUV in India

This post of mine is about the topmost SUV's (Sports Utility Vehicle) running on Indian Roads. I have chosen five SUV's that are most common in India and are in the range of 13 - 22 lacs. The SUV's are Toyota's Fortuner, Mitsubishi Pajero, Ford Endeavor,  Mahindra Scorpio and Tata Safari. I'll take up these SUV's one by one. These cars are are not new to the country and making there presence felt from so many years. There is no order of preference or ranking all five cars are equally good and each one of these have their own fan following. Lets start with Toyota's Fortuner.

Toyota Fortuner

Fortuner is a product of Japanese Automaker Toyota which is not new to the country. Fortuner was launched in India in 2009 and since then it has become one of the leading SUV in our country.  Toyota has given a correct name to its car as people who have fortunes, buy this fortuner. :) The car comes with a price tag of around 20 lacs which increases as you go up on additive features.
This SUV is capable enough to take on everything with the help of 3.0 litre engine and a full time 4WD and 7 seats to take out your whole family. Also the car is equipped with all the luxuries you expect. For safety point of view the car has ABS with EBD, Frontal Airbags and many more. The car is available in both manual and automatic transmission variants to suit your driving needs. This car has become a rage in India as the car has great looks with masculine exteriors which is preferred by the politicians and powerful guys in here. :) Have a look at the exteriors and Interiors.

Mitsubishi Pajero

Pajero is the offering of Mitsubishi which once leaded the Indian sedan market with its Lancer and Cedia models, but now Pajero is the only good product that Indians are interested in. The company recently launched a revamped version of the car to its fans with some tweaks in the engine, exteriors and here and there. The car has engine with the almost same displacement just as Fortuner but surely Fortuner wins the Competition. This car was my favorite SUV but I am not liking the looks of newer version they made.
Although the Interiors here take a lead. The car is equipped with all the top-notch technologies and offers great safety and entertainment features. The company claims that the Engine is tweaked to increase the performance which is a plus point for this car but this car misses out on Automatic Variant which is not present but it's still has a fan following which other SUV's can't match up. Below are the pictures of Interiors and Exteriors.

Ford Endeavor

This stylish car is a product of a American auto giant Ford. This SUV offers performance with style as its has amazing exteriors with super amazing interiors. You can take this car to a corporate meeting or to a mountain terrain, this car serves every purpose which its stylish looks. It comes with a power packed 2.5 litre engine for manual variant with an option of 3.0 litre Automatic version.
It has superb acceleration even in such a huge body and can touch up 100 kmph in just 13 secs. Equipped with EBD, ABS, 4WD and also has Frontal airbags for safety and a large screen DVD player with inbuilt SAT-NAV feature.. Take a look at this car below.

Mahindra Scorpio

Here comes the SUV from the Indian car maker Mahindra. This car is an old one but with constants upgrades which makes it the most popular SUV in the Indian market. The car has replaced other SUV's in terms of sales, styling and performance and the Mahindra brand has become the king of SUV's. The car has come a long way and the engine and performance shows that. It comes with 2.2 litre Engine with technologies which are less to none.
The car comes under the price tag of 14 lacs for a high end version which is very less than the above mentioned cars but surely it can give serious competition to them. Famous with the tagline " Mighty Muscular Scorpio" this car wins many hearts.

Tata Safari

This one is another Indian product from a world known company Tata which has given world the cheapest 1 lac rupee car Tata Nano. Safari is an all time hit with the Indian SUV market as Tata has a great experience in Transport market. Tata Safari is known for its Powerful Body and Superb Performance, Although Scorpio gives a great competition to Safari but this car has the experience and robust quality of Tata.
The company has launched a new version of Safari named Safari Storme which comes up with great styling  and added features. This car comes in the price range of under 14 lac and is worth having. The car is spacious and  has 2.2 litre VariCor Engine to give it a powerful drive.

This is it about the Top 5 SUV's of India but I would like to inculde Mahindra XUV 500, Chevrolet Captiva, Mahindra Bolero as great condenters for the top 5 list but above cars are much more better and popular than these in the Indian market. Will come up with another interesting topic again. Keep reading !!

LED DRLs : Daytime running Lamp

Among all the automobiles cars are my favorite and their styling is the thing that i like the most. In this post I will tell you about the Daytime Running Lamp (DRL) which are the most stylish feature of a car and I personally like them the most. DRLs can be found on every costly cars nowadays be it an Audi or A Mercedes or A BMW or A Volkswagen. These Daytime running lamps add beauty to the front grille of the car which attracts the eyeballs of the viewers. Lets us now see what is DRL, Why it is used, What it is made up of???
A typical DRL

What is DRL??

I first saw these on an Audi roaming around in my neighborhood an year back. I was amazed to see the beauty these lights added to the car. But one thing I found bit weird that these lights were turned On even in daylight so became curious about the usage as normally a light is used to increase visibility in night time. I will let you know about the usage but let me tell you what is DRL.
Daytime running lamps is a strip like structure consisting of a series of LED's which emit bright light and these strips are paced at the both the corners of front bumpers.

Why it is Used??

Although If I am the owner of the car I don't mind these DRLs placed on my bumpers even if they don't have any use as they add the style factor but in this world nothing is done without a purpose.
Daytime running lamps are used to improve the visibility of an DRLs equipped car to other vehicles. This technology was introduced because in countries where the lighting conditions in winter daytime is bit dark, the vehicles have to either turn on dimmed headlamps or look for another alternative.
DRLs offer great visibility factor as the lights are bright and can be easily seen in low lighting conditions and there by reducing the accidental risks. Studies shows the after the introduction of Daytime running lamps the accidents in low lighting have decreased comparatively.

Volkswagen Jetta in series with DRLs On

How they work??

LED Used in DRLs

The DRLs are made up of LED (Light Emitting Diode) which consume less energy and give bright lights. The LEDs are made up of semiconductor material like silicon which is abundant in nature. The DRLs present in the cars can be programmed to automatically turn on when the light is low. The sensors present in the car checks whether the light is optimum or is low, as soon as the outside light gets low the DRLs get automatically turned on. Although user have a choice to turn off the automatic mode and turn on the DRLs manually.

Benefits:

  • Safety: Other vehicles can see you quickly even in low light conditions.
  • Ease: As the DRLs get automatically switched on the driver can relax doing no added effort.
  • Fuel Consumption: As DRLs are made up of LEDs and power consumption of LED is very low and usage of headlights is reduced so there is a saving in fuel consumption.
  • Headlight Life: As the usage of headlights is diminished, their life is increased.
  • Style: For me this is the most important benefit of these DRLs :)

Automobile Battery : The Power Supply

With this post I am highlighting the very basic part of an automobile, the Battery. Battery is the power house of an automobile, be it a car or a truck or a motorcycle. Batteries act as a power source for the vehicle, they provide power from sparking of the engine to lighting up the headlights. By this post you'll get to know what is a battery, what it is made of, and how it works. Lets have a look..

What is an automobile battery ??

A typical lead-acid automobile battery

First of all let's have a look at the technical definition of an automobile battery and it states that "An automobile battery is a type of rechargeable battery that supplies electric energy to an automobile." The sole purpose of the battery is igniting the engine so that the vehicle can start off and in addition to that the battery provides power to different parts of the car like stereo, headlamps, inner illumination etc.

What it is made of ??

Inside of an lead-acid battery

The most common type of batteries are lead-acid batteries where the lead part is the electrodes and the acid part is the electrolyte. The batteries contains a series of plates dipped inside the electrolyte which is Sulpuric Acid, you must have heard this name before in chemistry classes. There are partitions inside the battery which are called cells and the batteries are mostly defined by the no. of cells present in it. Most common ones used in automobiles are 6 cells batteries.
Every battery has two terminals one is positive and another one is negative. Here in this case the negative terminal is formed by pure Lead plate and the positive one is formed lead oxide and these two terminals are present dipped inside the acid part which is sulphuric acid. each cell contains the positive and negative terminals and these series of six cells is covered up with the hard casing inside which the whole reaction takes place.

How it works ??

For this part you must scratch your mind and think about the chemistry part that you learnt in school. Think about ions, charge, current etc. Here are the equations involved:

The overall chemical reaction is:

At the negative terminal the charge and discharge reactions are:

At the positive terminal the charge and discharge reactions are:

Discharging:

Discharging a battery causes the formation of lead sulfate crystals (PbSO4) at both the negative and positive terminals, as well as the release of electrons (e-) due to the change in valence charge of the lead. The formation of this lead sulfate uses sulfate from the sulfuric acid (H2SO4) electrolyte surrounding the battery. As a result the electrolyte becomes less concentrated. Full discharge would result in both electrodes being covered with lead sulfate and water rather than sulfuric acid surrounding the electrodes. At full discharge the two electrodes are the same material, and there is no chemical potential or voltage between the two electrodes. In practice, however, discharging stops at the cutoff voltage, long before this point. The battery should not therefore be discharged below this voltage.

A amaron battery placed inside a car.

Charging:

The charging reaction converts the lead sulfate  (PbSO4) at the negative electrode to lead. At the positive terminal the reaction converts the lead to lead oxide (PbO2) . As a by-product of this reaction, hydrogen is evolved. During the first part of the charging cycle, the conversion of lead sulfate to lead and lead oxide is the dominant reaction. However, as charging proceeds and most of the lead sulfate is converted to either lead or lead dioxide, the charging current electrolyzes the water from the electrolyte and both hydrogen and oxygen gas are evolved, a process known as the "gassing" of the battery. If current is being provided to the battery faster than lead sulfate can be converted, then gassing begins before all the lead sulfate is converted, that is, before the battery is fully charged.

This is it about the Automobile Battery...Hope you liked the post..will come up with other interesting posts. Stay tuned to KnowTheAuto.com...Happy Reading!!!
